Commercial HVAC News: What You Need To Know About The R-22 Phase-Out

Industries are constantly evolving to become more competitive, to deliver a better product or service, and to align themselves with more eco-friendly and efficient initiatives – and the commercial air conditioning in NJ industry is no different. Part of this includes the phase-out of R-22 – here is a guide from our commercial HVAC contractors.

Why is R-22 Being Phased Out?

The Montreal Protocol and Clean Air Act of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is cutting the production of R-22 (a hydrofluorocarbon linked to the depletion of the ozone layer) in favor of the introduction of more environmentally-friendly coolants.

Since 2015, there’s been less and less R-22 produced and production will be cut to 9 million pounds this year and only 4 million pounds in 2019. In 2020, production will stop completely, and no imports will be made into the USA.

Due to this reduction in supply, recharging R-22 air conditioning systems has increased significantly. Even with some companies stockpiling the refrigerant, the fact is that availability and price is an issue – so what should businesses do?

Solutions for Businesses with R-22 Commercial Air Conditioning Systems

These are the current options available to owners of R-22 air conditioning systems.

  • Wait for your systems to break down: While this is an affordable solution in the short-term, it does have its drawbacks. When 202 arrives and everyone starts running out of R-22, there is going to be a surge in demand for new air conditioning systems. This could leave you sitting with a broken-down system while contractors are booked up to install new systems for multiple clients.
  • Retrofit your system or use a new refrigerant: This is a more affordable course of action, but your current system will need professional evaluation well in advance to ensure that the retrofit is a workable option or to see if the system can be adapted for a different refrigerant, as this isn’t an option that can work for all systems.
  • Replace your air conditioning system now: This is the most proactive response and also the most expensive – but only in the short term. With the right commercial air conditioning system, buildings can lower their energy costs – and that’s without considering the expense of sticking with the rising cost of R-22 either. In addition, the State of New Jersey also has several rebate programs in place to reward and assist commercial and industrial buildings taking this path.
