Advanced Control Systems for Packaged HVAC Systems 

 HVAC systems in commercial buildings in the USA – in fact, 60% of commercial buildings make use of advanced controls. By adding control systems to existing packaged HVAC systems, the savings can be considerable, with study leader and PNNL engineer Srinivas Katipamula saying they demonstrate ranges between “a whopping 67% cost savings in San Francisco to a still-substantial 28% in Seattle”. So, what would these controls do?

  • They include air-side economizers that use cold air from the outside to cool the building when applicable rather than utilizing the compressor.
  • VFD controls modulate the speed of ventilation fans based on active measurements of the buildings air flow and temperature rather than simply running the fan constantly at full speed.
  • Controls adjust the cooling capacity of the compressor when needed based on active measurements of temperature.
  • Ddemand-controlled ventilation can modulate air flow based on carbon dioxide measurements in the building, thereby ensuring comfort and good air quality to the environment.

One of the most interesting findings of the study was that these controls not only directly benefit businesses through cost-savings, but they also result in a more comfortable workplace and reduce carbon emissions as a whole. In fact, as many as 16 200-MW coal-powered plants could be placed on idle if just half of the USA’s HVAC systems were fitted with advanced controls.
