Ideally, air gaps should be sealed both within the IT racks as well as between them. Blanking panels are ideal for closing off empty rack slots and hanging plastic curtains to seal off the cold aisle is recommended.
  • Running your HVAC at the right temperature: Low temperatures are often touted as ideal, but many data centers are set to a far lower temperature than they should be, leading to rising cooling costs. The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) recommends a maximum of 80.6 degrees Fahrenheit – which is what Google uses. This can lead to a 2% savings in energy costs.
  • Server load: Servers that exclude all non-essential features are able to operate in a higher-temperature environment, lowering your overall cooling load.
