TIPS TO PREPARE YOUR HVAC SYSTEM FOR A SNOWSTORM

If a snowstorm was to hit tomorrow, would you be prepared? Winter is a few months away, and although you likely aren’t experiencing cold temperatures and adverse weather conditions now, it’s never too early to prepare your HVAC system. Anyone who lives in a colder climate knows that winter weather can be very unpredictable, and if the forecast calls for snow, it may be a light dusting or it might be a full-on snowstorm. And when a snowstorm hits you need to be prepared, so here are steps you can take now to ensure that’s the case.

Schedule A Heating System Inspection

When was the last time your HVAC system was inspected by a technician? If you can’t remember, that means it’s time to call and schedule an inspection as soon as possible. Your trusted HVAC technician will check the outlet, induction unit, motor, electrical switches, belts, and all other components. One of the most common reasons that an HVAC system malfunctions is faulty wiring, and wiring issues are not visible from the outside.

Smaller issues might require a simple tune-up, which is much more affordable than a major repair when your system breaks down. Investing in regular HVAC maintenance is always worth it because it keeps your system in optimal condition and it helps catch potential problems before they turn into big problems.

Check and Replace Filters

If you don’t already, we recommend you change your air filters about every two months. During winter when you’re using your heating system more, your filters will be catching even more dust and debris than usual, so if the forecast calls for a snowstorm it’s best to have new, fresh filters. Although air filters are out of sight and can be easy to forget about, it’s very important to change them regularly to keep your air supply as clean as possible, because clogged air filters result in your HVAC system working overtime, using more energy and costing you more money.

When a snowstorm hits and your heating system is running constantly, you want to know that your air filters are able to do their job.

Maintain the Furnace

If you have a furnace, when was the last time you had it tuned up? Keeping your furnace well maintained is essential for optimum energy efficiency, and for keeping your energy costs as low as possible. Your HVAC technician will check the regulators, the belts, and the switches to ensure they’re all working properly, and they’ll check for any wear and tear that is cause for concern. You don’t want your furnace to break down during a snowstorm, so schedule a tune-up now before the colder months arrive.

Clear Your Vents

The warm air from your HVAC system is pumped into your home via the vents, so keeping them clear from any blockages is important. First, check that there isn’t anything blocking any of your vents, like furniture or drapes, because blockages keep the warm air from circulating properly. In bedrooms it may be a pile of dirty clothes blocking the vents, or a backpack that’s been tossed on the floor. Even if it involves temporarily rearranging your furniture during the winter, clearing your vents from any obstructions is a critical step of “winterizing” your home.

The autumn season is the perfect time to prepare your HVAC system for winter. Snowstorms, blizzards, and other inclement weather conditions can be extremely unpleasant to endure if your HVAC system isn’t in great working condition.
