WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR AIR CONDITIONING WON’T TURN ON

 If you’ve noticed that your air conditioning won’t turn on, there are several steps you can take before calling your commercial HVAC technician. Now that spring and warmer weather are approaching, it’s important that your AC system is working properly and that it doesn’t break down. Check The Thermostat First 

If more than one person has access to your thermostat, check and ensure it’s set to the “cool” setting. If it is, set the thermostat to five degrees below the current indoor temperature, and then the thermostat might kick on and do its job. It can be easy to bump the thermostat to the incorrect setting, especially if multiple people are accessing it throughout the day, so this quick fix sometimes does the trick. 

Check If The Circuit Breaker Tripped

We’ve all experienced a tripped circuit breaker before. Perhaps there were too many electronic devices being used at one time, resulting in a power surge that results in a blown fuse. When your circuit breaker trips, your air conditioning won’t work, so it’s worth checking to see if a fuse has somehow blown. There are two main places you should check:

  • The main indoor circuit breaker, which is the panel where all the switches are located. If one of your circuits has tripped, the switch will be halfway between the ON and OFF positions, so switch it fully off then back to the ON position. If any switches won’t stay in the ON position, call an HVAC technician.
  • Your building’s exterior shutoff box fuse. You won’t be able to flip these fuses, they’ll need to be replaced. 

Check The Shut-Off Switch 

Most shut-off switches are found next to the outside air conditioning unit in a metal box affixed to the building. If an HVAC technician has recently been working on your system, there’s a chance they might have accidentally left the switch flipped to the OFF position. If it’s in the OFF position, flip it to the ON position and see if this fixes the issue. 

Check For A Clogged Drain Pan & Lines

Your air conditioning system creates condensation when it’s turned on, and this condensation is removed from your building via a drain line. When the drain pan gets full, or when the drain line gets clogged, the safety switch is triggered and your air conditioning system will automatically shut down. If you have the tools to check the drain line for any blockages and remove the clog, this may fix the problem and fix your AC system.

It’s often a simple fix like checking that the thermostat is on the correct setting that gets your system up and running.
